Academics

At Carolina Hybrid, a high-quality curriculum will be taught at all grade levels by skilled teachers or experts in their field. A variety of curriculum resources will be utilized at each grade level to engage students, incorporate multi-sensory methods and appeal to a variety of learning styles. Through consultation with teachers, parents, and experts in their field, we are seeking to develop a curriculum plan that is affordable, practical for both home and school use, and builds a firm academic foundation for students in grades K – 12.

Lower School

Our heart for the lower school program at Carolina Hybrid Academy is to build a strong academic foundation while keeping in mind the developmental stages and needs of K5 through 5th graders. It is a season of building a firm foundation in the subjects of reading, writing, and math, and a time of exposure in history and science. Our desire is to preserve wonder and foster a love for learning in each student; helping them grow in their skills of observation, attentiveness, and comprehension.

MATH
Lower school mathematics gives students a glimpse into the order and truth God has built into His creation. Building arithmetic skills can be both challenging and fun! We will use games, songs, manipulatives, flashcards, workbook practice, and other techniques to build these foundational skills.

SCIENCE
There are so many wonderful aspects of science that highlight God’s creativity and character. Lower school is a time to get familiar with the multiple genres of science, scientists, terms, and scientific methods. Science lends itself to an abundance of hands-on learning.

LANGUAGE ARTS
Learning to order our thoughts and words into effective communication starts with identifying letters, sounds, and words in K5 and grows into cohesive and creatively detailed composition in 5th grade. There is so much wonder to be discovered and skills to be learned by diving into great pieces of literature! We aim to build reading and writing confidence by developing critical thinking skills as well as great listening and comprehension skills. The foundations of phonics, reading, spelling, grammar rules, parts of speech, and writing structure will be the framework we focus on building.

HISTORY
Students can feel disconnected from themes, timelines, and people in history unless we wrap it in a story and dive a little deeper into the adventure, emotion, challenges and victories that were faced. We’re excited to go on this adventure with our lower school students starting with exposure to American history, state and world geography, and continuing into a world history rotation in 4th and 5th grade. This rotation will prepare them for middle school.

BIBLE
As our students are growing roots in their identity in Jesus, we want to help them understand His great love for them. We’ll do this with a curriculum teaching a Christian worldview, character cards, scripture memory with practical application, and chapel times. We will highlight God’s character in the subjects we teach and stories we read; working at a pace and with a priority to stop for the teachable moments of the heart.

PARENTAL ROLE
In the elementary years, the parent is the co-teacher. We encourage parents to work closely alongside students to practice skills together, refresh concepts taught in class, while attentively observing their successes and struggles.

Middle School

At Carolina Hybrid Academy, we recognize that Middle School is a huge time of transition.  Our Middle School program for grades 6th-8th is designed to bridge the gap between elementary and high school, seeking to boost student confidence and prepare students to handle more responsibility in life.
MATH
Middle school math courses are designed to prepare students for Algebra.  We will continue building on students’ previous knowledge and challenge them to embrace new concepts. Beginning in 7th grade and continuing through high school, two tracts of math will be offered per grade level.
SCIENCE
Middle School science begins with a History of Science course designed to expose students to a wide range of famous scientists and scientific principles in biology, chemistry and physics. Beginning in 7th grade, two tracts of science will be offered to align with math prerequisites for higher level science classes.  Students in Middle School will also have the opportunity to explore Earth Science and Life Science or Physical Science.
LANGUAGE ARTS
We believe that language arts exists to help students see and understand God’s gift of communication and language.  Students in Middle School will analyze great literary works and continue cultivating a love for reading in their Literature class.  A separate Grammar and Writing course will be offered to focus on the application of grammar skills and to learn to arrange and organize compositions.
HISTORY
Middle School students will be encouraged to view history in light of God’s sovereignty and plan.  These students will continue a World History rotation that begins in upper elementary school. A complete year of U.S. History will be taught in 8th grade.
BIBLE/LIFE SKILLS
A Christian worldview curriculum will be utilized to help middle schoolers begin to apply truths of God’s word to their daily lives. Students in this course will also be taught important life skills such as study skills and digital citizenship.
PARENTAL ROLE
As Middle School students grow in their independence and responsibility, the role of the parent at home begins to change from co-teacher to guide.  Parents may find their role moving away from direct academic assistance to becoming more of a counselor as their teen navigates new challenges in life.

High School

The High School program at Carolina Hybrid Academy is designed to prepare students for the future. Whether a student is college-bound or preparing to enter the workforce, we aim to touch not just the mind, but also the heart and soul of the students God sends us.

MATH
Math helps students develop abstract reasoning skills, enhance their problem solving abilities and utilize computational tools which are often necessary in the world of work. High school math classes will ensure that students understand concepts in number and quantity, algebra, functions, modeling, geometry and statistics and probability. Students at CHA will take Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and may choose Pre-Calculus, Consumer Math, or dual enrollment options for upper level courses.

SCIENCE
High school science classes are important for developing good thinking skills and learning to solve complex problems. Courses will be offered in Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology and Physics.

LANGUAGE ARTS
High school students are ready to become confident communicators of the facts and ideas that they encounter. English I – IV will introduce students to literary masterpieces and will challenge them to express ideas in a variety of written forms.

HISTORY
High school history students will engage in studying the world around them as well as seeking to learn how the past affects what is happening today. Courses will be offered in Cultural Geography, World History, U.S. History and Government/Economics.

WORLD LANGUAGE
Studying other languages is a great way to develop respect for other cultures and to enhance one’s communication skills. CHA will offer classes in Spanish 1, 2, and 3.

ELECTIVES
Electives play a vital role in helping students explore subjects of interest and to enhance critical thinking skills. A variety of electives will be offered each year depending upon enrollment. Course options include: Computer Science, Digital Photography, Logic & Critical Thinking, Biblical Worldview, and Personal Finance/Leadership.

PARENTAL ROLE
In the high school years, students are now responsible for shouldering the academic workload. Parents assist in an advisory role and play an important part in keeping track of the information needed for high school transcripts.
